Follicular Unit Grafting
Follicular unit transplants have ushered in a new era in surgical hair replacement and has progressed light-years from the early days of large grafts that often produced an unnatural, conspicuous appearance. Thanks to the development of innovative techniques and advanced instrumentation, the results today are remarkably natural. Our patients who style their hair combed back remain confident that their new hairlines look perfectly natural.
Hairs grow from the scalp in natural groups called follicular units, containing from one to four hairs. Follicular unit grafting involves transplanting or moving these units to the bald or thinning areas and this technique represents the most advanced form of hair transplants available. We at Drs. Berry, Tessler & Aronovitz feel comfortable saying we are among the most experienced hair transplant doctors in Michigan.
We begin by taking a thin strip of scalp from the back or sides of the head (the donor area). This denser zone provides follicles that are genetically pre-destined to grow throughout your lifetime.
This strip is then divided into follicular units. The process demands a highly skilled, precise dissection technique performed under the magnification of stereoscopic microscopes. Up to several thousand follicular units can be obtained from one donor strip.
The units are then separated into groups of one to four hairs for placement into the recipient (bald or thinning) area. The one-hair grafts make up the front of the hairline, and the two, three and four hair grafts are placed behind them. These grafts are placed very close together in a random pattern, mimicking nature and avoiding any appearance of rows.
This method results in hairlines that are very natural in appearance because we are only transplanting hairs as they naturally grow from the scalp. Furthermore, we can provide patients with excellent results in a single surgery. In so-called megasessions, we can transplant between 2,000 and 3,500 follicular units in a single session, taking five to 10 hours to complete. This extremely precise and complex procedure requires a profound degree of skill and care by a large, highly trained staff. The proper and effective performance of the procedure by a physician and assistants demands that they do it often and regularly.
ARTAS Robotic FUE Hair Transplant
The ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant system was designed with you, the patient, in mind. Developed by leading hair restoration physicians and researchers, it is a minimally invasive harvesting process, thus preserving the natural look of the donor area. It requires no stitches nor leaves a linear scar, making your hair restoration virtually undetectable, and has a fast recovery time. Patients can expect clinically proven results without the side effects and longer recovery time that is common with other procedures. With its advanced digital imaging, this robotic technology scans, tracks and grades each hair follicle selecting only the optimal hairs for transplantation. This process delivers robust grafts and produces a very natural looking result allowing your hair to be cut and styled any way you wish.
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)
Now there is an affordable way for you to improve your hair density without surgery or harmful side effects. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for hair restoration involves a simple injection of your own platelets into the vascular layer of your scalp.
PRP for Hair Regrowth
- Increases blood supply to the follicle
- Increases shaft size (thickness)
- Triggers and maintains the growth phase
- Controls hair growth cycle
- Decreases hair loss
How PRP Works
Platelets contain healing growth factors. Those growth factors are like signal callers that give instructions to your tissue to regenerate and multiply. This has lead different fields of medicine to utilize PRP for wound healing to speed up recovery time and regrow healthier, stronger tissue.
Now doctors have discovered new benefits for hair thickening and regrowth. With PRP for Hair, your growth factors and stem cells work together to reverse the miniaturization of the hair follicle and jumpstarting dormant hair back into the growth stage.
Propecia is a prescription medication that aids in slowing down hair loss. While it does not stop hair loss, it greatly decreases the rate of loss.
